monolithic

TURAMA LIGHT FESTIVAL 2019

Monolithic is an interactive art installation that lets the Auckland community interact with the four seasons on a monolithic sized LED screen using a kinect sensor.
Creating a simple, yet playful experience.

IN COLLABORATION WITH MARLO SAN MIGUEL & AARON CLELAND

CONCEPT

For thousands of years people have been fascinated by the sun, moon and the seasons, erecting monuments and celestial sites that celebrate mystical events. ‘Monolithic’ is a physical portal that can be used to interact and explore the four seasons; Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring, in a fun and accessible way. Aucklanders are used to multiple weather changes in one day. What makes the seasons most beautiful is the difference and change from one season to another and the journey nature takes us on. Monolithic lets the audience experience all of the four seasons, creating a true Auckland Winter experience.

Using body position, groups and individuals can affect each of the seasons on screen and interact with digital leaves, beach balls, flowers and colour, or look through the overhead portal to see the seasons extend up to the stars.

By experiencing seasons in a new and creative way we hope the people who interact with our work take away a fresh appreciation of the beauty of New Zealand's changing seasons.
